Obstetrics

Obstetric ultrasound

Scans to date the pregnancy, check the baby's anatomy and follow growth.

What it is

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the baby and placenta. It is safe for mother and baby and does not use radiation.

Who it's for

Pregnant women at key stages: early dating, the detailed anatomy scan around 18–22 weeks, and growth scans when needed.

What to expect

  • A scan through the abdomen (sometimes vaginal in early pregnancy)
  • Checks of the heartbeat, number of babies, placenta position and fluid
  • An explanation of the findings from your doctor

Common questions

Do I need a full bladder?
Only for some early scans. We will tell you when booking.
