What it is

Preeclampsia is high blood pressure with signs of organ strain that usually appears after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Eclampsia is when fits (seizures) occur.

Symptoms to act on

  • Severe headache that doesn't go away
  • Blurred vision or seeing spots
  • Pain under the ribs on the right side
  • Sudden swelling of the face and hands
  • Fits

Who is at higher risk

First pregnancies, twin pregnancies, women with chronic high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease, and women who had preeclampsia before. Some women at high risk are advised to take low-dose aspirin — only on a doctor's advice.

Treatment

Treatment includes blood pressure medicine, magnesium sulfate to prevent fits and, when needed, delivery of the baby. Close monitoring in hospital keeps mother and baby safe.
