What it is

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is heavy bleeding after birth, most often in the first 24 hours. It can become life-threatening within minutes.

Warning signs

  • Soaking a pad in less than an hour
  • Passing large clots
  • Feeling faint, dizzy or very weak
  • A fast heartbeat or cold, pale skin

Why facility birth matters

In a hospital, staff give medicine to help the womb contract straight after birth, watch bleeding closely and can give fluids, blood and emergency treatment if needed.

Reduce your risk

  • Attend antenatal care and treat anemia
  • Plan to give birth in a health facility
  • Tell staff if you bled heavily in a previous birth
