Spacing pregnancies protects mothers and babies. There are many safe methods, including long-acting options.

Why spacing matters

Waiting at least two years after a birth before trying for the next pregnancy lowers the risk of complications for both mother and baby.

Long-acting methods

  • Implant (in the arm) — up to 3 to 5 years
  • Copper IUD — up to 10 years or more
  • Hormonal IUD — several years, also lightens periods

Short-acting methods

  • Injectable every three months
  • Daily pills
  • Condoms — the only method that also protects against sexually transmitted infections

After childbirth

Many methods can be started soon after birth, including while breastfeeding. Ask about family planning at your antenatal or postnatal visit.

Your choice

All methods are reversible except sterilisation. Fertility returns quickly after stopping most methods. We will help you choose what suits your health and plans.
